Government Warns Public About Aadhaar-Related Scams Here’s How To Validate Your Cards Online

UIDAI, the Aadhaar governing body, has warned Aadhaar users against increasing incidents of fraud and scams. It urged citizens to be cautious and avoid sharing personal photos, including Aadhaar photo, through unofficial channels.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is proactively warning users about the risk of falling victim to Aadhaar-related scams on social media. Recently, the Aadhaar board issued a warning to citizens about sharing Aadhaar documents online through WhatsApp and email.

In its recent X message (formerly Twitter), UIDAI clarified that the government will never ask for proof of identity (POI) or proof of address (POA) for Aadhaar updates via email or WhatsApp. The Authority requests users to use approved online channels.

“#BewareOfFraudsters UIDAI will never ask you to share your POI/POA documents to update #Aadhaar via Email or Whatsapp. Update Aadhaar either online via #myAadhaarPortal or visit Aadhaar centers near you,” UIDAI tweeted.

Aadhaar scam rising
The directive follows the recent rise in Aadhaar-related scams, where fraudsters trick people into collecting their Aadhaar card and number. Since Aadhaar is a sensitive identification number issued to all Indian citizens, fraudsters can use one’s card for fraudulent activities.

QR code verification
To avoid such fraud or hassle, the government has asked people not to share Aadhaar with anyone. It also advised people to verify their Aadhaar card using the QR code on the card.

How to verify Aadhaar with QR code
To verify Aadhar using OTP:

  • Download the mAadhaar app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  • Open the app and tap on the “Verify Aadhaar” option.
  • Point your phone’s camera at the QR code on the Aadhaar card, e-Aadhaar, or Aadhaar PVC.
  • The app will scan the QR code and display the Aadhaar holder’s information.
  • Verify the information and tap on the “Verify” button.

However, if you find that your Aadhaar has been compromised, you should immediately report it to UIDAI. You can do this by calling their helpline 1947 or filing a complaint online at uidai.gov.in.

In addition, the government encourages citizens to keep Aadhaar safe by using secure channels such as myAadhaarPortal, mAadhaarApp and UIDAI’s social media channels.
