“Snapchat’s In-App Warning System Notifies Teen Users About Friend Requests from Non-Mutual Contacts”
Snap, the creator of the social media app, has announced a global rollout of in-app safety measures and warnings, aimed at enhancing protection for users aged 13 to 17 against online risks. These measures will facilitate safer communication, search activities, and provide age-appropriate content for teenage users. Snap will also introduce a new Strike System to address inappropriate accounts, offering more education on common online risks.
India, with a substantial number of Gen Z and millennial users, holds the highest Snapchat user count, according to Statista. The in-app warnings will alert teen users when someone attempts to add them as a friend without mutual contacts or not being in their contact list.
The Strike System will target accounts that promote age-inappropriate content, either through internal detection or user reports. Persistent rule violations will result in account bans under the new system.
Additionally, Snap will make its in-app content developed in partnership with Young Leaders for Active Citizenship (YLAC) accessible, providing valuable local resources on topics such as mental health, responsible sharing, and online safety.
Uthara Ganesh, Snap’s Head of Public Policy-South Asia, emphasized their commitment to creating a safe and creative environment on Snapchat, especially for their community in India, which comprises over 200 million users. The safety and well-being of this community remain their top priority.
