“Google’s Pixel 8 Series Launch: A Deeper Look

Google’s Pixel 8 series, comprising the standard Pixel 8 and the Pixel 8 Pro, is poised to make its official debut at the upcoming ‘Made by Google’ event scheduled for October 4th. Anticipated as a significant upgrade, these devices are expected to feature the next-gen Tensor G3 SoC, an improvement over the Tensor G2 SoC found in the Pixel 7 series. While Google has remained tight-lipped about the specifics of this in-house chip, recent leaks suggest it will incorporate advanced thermal management features, possibly by utilizing Samsung Foundry’s FO-WLP (Fan-out Wafer-level packaging) technology. This innovation is poised to reduce heat generation and enhance power efficiency in the Pixel 8 series.

According to tipster Revegnus (@Tech_Reve) on X (formerly Twitter), the Tensor G3, set to power the upcoming Pixel 8 series, could be among the first Samsung Foundry smartphone chips to adopt the FO-WLP packaging method. This shift is expected to address the overheating issues that have plagued previous Pixel phones.

The FO-WLP method has already been embraced by Qualcomm and MediaTek and could be a game-changer for Google’s Pixel lineup. The Tensor G3 single-chip system is anticipated to outperform its predecessors, with nine CPU cores arranged in a 1+4+4 configuration, a significant upgrade from last year’s Tensor G2, which featured a 4+2+2 core layout.

The new CPU is rumored to include a single Cortex-X3 core running at 3.00GHz, four Cortex-A715 cores at 2.45GHz, and four Cortex-A510 cores at 2.15GHz. It may also incorporate an ARM Mali-G715 GPU with 10 cores and a frequency of 890MHz. Additionally, the Tensor G3 SoC is expected to offer AV1 encode capabilities, enabling Samsung Multi-Function Codec (MFC) to support 8K30 video decoding and encoding in H.264 and HEVC.

The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are set to launch at the ‘Made by Google’ event on October 4th in New York at 10:00 AM local time (7:30 PM IST). Alongside the smartphones, the event will introduce the Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Buds Pro. Indian customers can begin pre-ordering the handsets via Flipkart starting October 5th.

Both Pixel 8 series devices are anticipated to ship with Android 14 and feature 120Hz refresh rate displays. The Pixel 8 Pro is expected to boast a 4,950mAh battery with 27W wired fast charging, while the Pixel 8 may come with a 4,485mAh battery supporting 24W wired charging and 12W wireless charging.”
