“MediaTek’s latest 3nm chip is designed to drive smartphones, tablets, smart vehicles, and various other devices.”
“MediaTek Makes Strides with 3nm Chipset, Promising Enhanced Performance and Efficiency
In a recent announcement, MediaTek revealed its groundbreaking 3nm chipset, developed in partnership with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). This advanced chipset, set to launch next year, is poised to deliver significant improvements in performance and energy efficiency when compared to current-generation offerings. While specific brand partnerships remain undisclosed, MediaTek’s innovation puts it in competition with tech giants Apple and Qualcomm, both of whom are also pursuing 3nm chip technology.
MediaTek’s 3nm chipset, created using TSMC’s cutting-edge 3nm process, is primed to power a range of devices, including smartphones, tablets, and smart vehicles, starting in the second half of 2024. The chipset boasts impressive statistics, with an 18 percent boost in performance or up to 32 percent reduction in power consumption at equivalent speeds, compared to TSMC’s N5 process. Additionally, MediaTek’s new chip showcases a remarkable 60 percent increase in logic density compared to older chip technology.
As the smartphone chip landscape evolves with smaller sizes, the complexity and cost of development continue to rise. TSMC initiated production of 3nm chips in December 2022, and MediaTek’s upcoming chipset is expected to feature prominently in its high-end Dimensity mobile processors, likely powering flagship smartphones slated for the latter half of 2024.
However, it’s worth noting that MediaTek’s 3nm chipset may not be the first to grace a flagship phone. Apple took the lead in collaborating with TSMC on their 3nm chipset, expected to power the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are set to retain the A16 Bionic chip from the previous year’s flagship lineup.”
